Hokitika Fire Station
Boutique accommodation in the heart of Hokitika
Steeped in local history, this iconic listed building has been lovingly restored and converted into 5 beautifully appointed holiday apartments. Each apartment has it’s own unique feel but all 5 are equally welcoming with thoughtful touches of luxury.
The story of the fire station began back in 1864 when gold was found near the Taramakau River. The township grew rapidly with hastily pitched canvas tents to closely built houses and created the need for a fire station to meet the ever-present threat of fire. Over time a newer fire station was built and this station went through stages of being residential to a wine bar.
It was at this stage we were approached to convert the Fire Station with sensitivity towards it’s history and importance to the town. The scope of works extended from the structural to interior design. Located alongside the Hokitika River this building stood strong with good bones being double brick and concrete.
Aiming at high end accommodation a design was put forward for 5 spacious boutique units, the point of difference being size, quality, uniqueness and a connection to the years gone by. Three units are located on the upper level and two on the lower. A grand entrance, spacious laundry, outdoor courtyard with fireplace and bike storage complete the fully equipped accommodation which is located on the West Coast Wilderness Cycle Trail. Various fire fighting antiques were sourced from across the country and as a tribute to the fire station each apartment has it’s own fire pole!
Review:
“From the minute we walked into this building everything about it was exceptional. The time taken to restore and decorate this building was well spent. We fell in love with the apartment - kudos to the team that decorated it because it was beautiful. Highly recommend it to anyone visiting Hokitika. It was perfect, nothing to dislike.” - Lesley, Auckland
